The History of balans®
1976.. When people have a tendency to improvise and you are observing a need, this can be the start of developing a new product. How to be functional, combined with comfort at low tables in traditional furniture, was the start of what we today call balans®furniture. The balans®furniture is based on the idea of giving support and comfort to the natural and basic sitting position.
1978.. Initiator Hans Christian Mengshoel invited the three furniture designers Oddvin Rykken, Peter Opsvik and Svein Gusrud to design and develop products based on the balans®consept.
1979.. balans presents “balans alternative sitting” in Copenhagen at the "Scandinavian Furniture Fair".
1980.. Different balans® chairs were implemented in the collection of four producers in Norway.
1984.. The company Balans AS receives the SAS Export Pioneer Price.
1986.. The “balansgroup” represented by O. Rykken, P.Opsvik, S. Gusrud and H.C. Mengshoel receives the Jacob List Price.
1996.. Balans Management AS was established in 1996 to be a company to develop a new generation of balans® chairs to the benefits for the license producers of balans®. Patents balans® chairs are registered with several utility patents and design patents.

NEW STOCK ARRIVING EARLY JUNE - Taking forward orders.
Several years ago HAG decided to discontinue its popular balans kneeling chair, a revolutionary design originally developed in 1976 by Hans Christian Mengshoel, who created chairs where you could sit in a natural balance with an open hip angle, like riding a horse.
This new balans style of chair caused a revolution in the way we sit, and over the years that followed, numerous new chair designs were marketed under the balans® trademark.
Based on the concept that balanced sitting is active sitting: yet relaxed, in 2010 Hans Christian created a new generation of balans® kneeling chairs with a new patented seat design specially designed for "balanced sitting" to encourage a natural sitting position.
The balans® Energy gas lift kneeling chair is latest and newest design to be launched.
Hans Christian says conventional chairs have always had two fundamental disadvantages
- a person seated on such a chair will have a hip angle of 90° or less, the hip angle being the angle between torso and legs, which causes the abdomen to press against the heart and lungs and reduce a person’s breathing capacity.
- conventional seats create pressure against the back of the thighs, and the front edge of the seat also presses against the thighs. The major blood vessels from the legs are located in this area, and the pressure compresses the muscle tissue surrounding the veins, reducing the free flow of blood. For example, people over time change their sitting position to reduce this pressure, which leads to poor posture, muscle pain and bad backs.
Saddle seats were designed as an answer to these problems, primarily by creating an “open” hip angle, i.e. the angle between torso and legs is greater than 90°. An open hip angle eases breathing giving the seated person higher oxygen content in the blood.
Therefore, it is easier to stay awake, and helps the body to be aligned along a vertical line through the body’s centre of gravity. A person seated in this way has to maintain their balance actively, i.e. with small movements of the muscles.
A saddle seat is also meant to relieve the pressure against the back of the thighs, however Hans Christian believes this to only be partially true, and has therefore created a new tapered seat to correct this weakness, which is the basis for this new balans® kneeling chair.
