MSM or Methylsulfonylmethane is an odourless, tasteless natural substance derived from sea water. The oceans are constantly releasing an organic form of sulphur into the atmosphere which becomes oxidised to form MSM. This is returned to the land and sea in rain and absorbed by all plant life, in fact all living organisms.
Extensive research, particularly by Portland University in Oregon has shown that this natural organic source of sulphur is easily assimilated in the human body.
Ideally, raw fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, fish and poultry should provide us with adequate amounts on a daily basis. However, food processing and refining such as heating, drying, dehydration, storage and overuse of soils where crops are grown has caused depletion of many valuable nutrients including organic sulphur.
Sulphur is stored in every cell of our body. As a component of amino acids (protein), enzymes and hormones it is essential for the human body in maintaining its structure and function.
It is needed to hold tissue together and for the growth and maintenance of cartilage, collagen, bone, tendons, hair, skin and nails.
It aids in maintaining flexibility and elasticity of all connective tissue. It is a component of glucosamine that gives cartilage its strength and resilience.
Importantly, research has shown that supplementation with MSM works on increasing cell permeability in the body. This allows more nutrients to enter the cells and more toxic matter to leave.
This process enhances blood circulation and the structure, growth, repair and healing of cell tissue. This is why it is now being used successfully as a natural anti-inflammatory to reduce joint pain, stiffness and muscle cramping. For example, over exertion of muscles causes a build up of lactic acid that causes pain. MSM works by flushing the lactic acid out of the body. It also works with, and increases the absorption of glucosamine and chondroitin in helping to restore structural integrity of damaged joints.
Thus it may be helpful for sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, gout, fibromyalgia and back pain. As a nutritional supplement MSM has shown to be non-toxic and appears not to interfere with any prescribed medications a person may be taking.
Research is continuing…
