Product Description

HermanMiller Embody® is different. Because every body is different.

Bad Backs is licensed to sell the Herman Miller Chair range in NSW (excluding ACT), VIC & WA.

Jeff Weber and his visionary design partner Bill Stumpf set out to create a chair that solved a problem no one else was addressing—the lack of harmony between people and their computers.

This was the design principle used in the making of Embody. Every part of the office chair was designed to serve a very specific, healthful purpose. None of its technology is hidden, but instead, is part of its aesthetic. After years of research and design, building, testing, then doing it all over again (and again), the art of design and the science of seating perfectly came together, creating a chair—and an idea—unlike any other.

Features:

That Floating Feeling

Embody’s Pixelated Support™ technology is in both the seat and chair back. It automatically conforms to your body’s micro-movements, distributing your weight evenly. This improves blood flow, lowers resting heart rate, and eliminates discomfort and distractions. The feeling is as if you’re floating in your chair.

Inspired by Human Movement

Embody’s back is inspired by the human spine. The back is alive. As you twist and turn in your chair, Embody moves with you. Its Backfit adjustment adapts to the unique curvature of your spine, holding your head in balance to your technology while you move freely and naturally.

A Exoskeletal Design

The exoskeletal form of Embody was inspired by the human spine, so why not make the chair’s covering behave like skin? Herman Miller collaborated with materials designer Susan Lyons to create new textiles specifically for Embody. Embody uses spacer and knit constructions, the kind used in sneakers and geo-textiles. They cushion the sitter, are breathable, translucent, and resilient. Every bit of material used is purposeful. Nothing is wasted or superfluous.

Narrow Back

Embody’s frameless, narrow back allows your arms and shoulders to move more freely. This movement helps open your lungs and encourages deeper breathing, as well as more focused thinking.

Zoned Support

The Embody tilt provides three zones of support that introduce a new model of kinematics that stabilizes the pelvis and supports the upper back without pressure on the thighs. This technology supports the spine through a wide range of work postures.

Working Recline

In the working recline, Embody shifts your weight to the chair’s back, helping your head and eyes stay perfectly aligned with your computer display.

Reflective Recline

The support continues in Embody’s maximum tilt position, allowing reflective tasks such as talking on the phone, stretching, and most importantly, thinking.

One Size, One Body

With a gas lift rated to 136kg, it can raise the user from a low position of 43cm to a maximum height of 56cm.

Seat depth can easily be extended whilst seated, from a minimum length of 38cm to a maximum of 46cm, to accommodate users with longer legs and longer thigh lengths.

The arm rests can also be adjusted vertically as well as laterally through a range of 165mm-292mm (height) and 304mm-533mm (width).

The Embody story began in the design studio of Jeff Weber and the late Bill Stumpf. They saw an unsolved problem: the lack of physical harmony between us and our computers. They came up with a radical idea: what if a chair could do more than just minimise the negative effects of sitting? Could they design a chair that actually had positive effects on the body?

"You can't design without empathy." said Weber, who also designed our Caper chair. "Since design has become more technology based, we've had to sit in our chairs in front of computers for longer periods, just like everyone else. We identify with the problems people have as a result of sitting".

Bill Stumpf, who designed our Aeron, Equa and Ergon work chairs and worked for Herman Miller for more than three decades, brought the idea to us. Could such a chair be designed and made? We worked with more than 30 professionals, who contributed their expertise. Medical professionals and other specialists in the fields of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy and ergonomics helped to test hypotheses, review prototypes and conduct studies that helped to guide the development of the first health-positive chair.

Creating harmony between people and their technology

Embody recognizes that people and their computers have a strained relationship.  We sit and stare at our monitors for hours, motionless, clicking stuff. This lack of movement isn't health for our bodies, or our minds.

More Innovation.  Less Impact.

Of all the ideas that went into the design of the Embody chair, one of the biggest was to make the smallest possible impact on the environment.  Embody is made from 42% recyclable materials and is 95% recyclable after its lifecyle.

Embody is produced in a facility that generates an average of 77 pounds of landfill per month, barely enough to fill up a rubbish bin.  This same facility used 100% renewable energy, including wind, and has also eliminated all hazardous waste generation.
