Exercise
Exercise is a critical component in both overcoming and preventing back problems, and today we know that when back pain strikes, activity beats rest as a treatment.
Many people suffering from back pain lack adequate levels of flexibility, strength and control of the muscles surrounding the back. Undertaking exercise will improve these weaknesses.
The benefits of exercise include:
- Stronger muscles
- Injury prevention
- Decreased pain and stress on the spine
- Improved fitness, posture, mobility and agility
With the onset of back pain, patients are usually advised to rest for a short period to allow any inflammation to subside. When acute pain has improved, you can undertake low impact exercises such as stretching, cycling, walking and swimming. With further improvement, more rigorous exercise activity may be undertaken.
Because some exercises may aggravate an aching back, you may wish to consult a health professional to design an exercise program that suits your needs.
