Hospital brings MRI into the operating room
“About three weeks ago, I went into seizures at home and found out I had this tumor,” said Lonnie Czerwiec of Roseville. The tumor is being removed in a new state-of-the-art operating room at Henry Ford Hospital. This operating room is the only one in Michigan allowing neurosurgeons to perform an MRI during surgery.
“In brain surgery, we always try to remove as much of the tumor as possible while safely preserving as much of the brain as we can,” said her neurosurgeon, Dr. Steven Kalkanis. “This intra-operative technology allows us to see if there’s any remnant. That allows us to get to those lingering cancer cells.”
