National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is a part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is the Federal Government’s lead agency for scientific research on complementary and integrative health approaches. Established in 1991 as the Office of Alternative Medicine, it was later renamed the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) before receiving its current name in 2014.
NCCIH’s mission is to determine, through rigorous scientific investigation, the fundamental science, usefulness, and safety of complementary and integrative health approaches and their roles in improving health and healthcare. The center conducts and supports research on a wide range of complementary health products and practices, including natural products, mind and body practices, and whole-person health approaches .
