New first-aid product combines cold and compression in one
We all know the importance of ‘icing’ an injury to prevent swelling and speed-up the healing process.   DIY ice-packs can be awkward and ineffective, and while they provide cooling, they don’t offer the all-important ‘compression’ aspect, which is twice as effective as using ice alone. However a new remedial product is giving people access to instant, portable and affordable cold-compression therapy.
- Lightweight, portable, economical and easy-to-use
- Can be used at home, at sports events and by medical professionals alike
- New to Bad Backs (badbacks.com.au)
We all know the importance of ‘icing’ an injury to prevent swelling and speed-up the healing process.   DIY ice-packs can be awkward and ineffective, and while they provide cooling, they don’t offer the all-important ‘compression’ aspect, which is twice as effective as using ice alone. However a new remedial product is giving people access to instant, portable and affordable cold-compression therapy.
The Lumark® cold compression therapy products, available through Bad Backs (badbacks.com.au) represent a major breakthrough in the way we treat acute sprains, trauma and a range of chronic conditions with RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). The Lumark® range of products are specifically designed to target different problem areas including ankle, calf, knee, elbow, lower back, thigh and wrist. Just refrigerate and it’s ready to use, anywhere anytime, and designed to reduce swelling and relieve pain from strains, sprains and pulled ligaments.
“The Lumark® cold compression therapy products are proving to be very popular with athletes, sporting clubs, active people and even parents of sporting kids who are keen to have portable, easy-to-apply products to deal with an emergency”, explains Felicity Wood, director of Bad Backs. “It allows them peace-of-mind to know that if an injury occurs that they have access to high-quality cold-compression, that is much more effective than an ice-pack”, says Felicity.
The Lumark® range of products comprises a cold gel compression wrap that provides pliable and focused compression, and a self-inflating pump giving optimum control to manage swelling, hematoma, edema and pain.
In addition to treating sporting injuries, the Lumark® range of products can also provide relief for sufferers of arthritis, degenerative joint disease and even for post-operative care.
The Lumark® cold compression therapy products start at $39.95 for a calf compression product.
The Lumark® cold compression range:
- Ankle
- Calf
- Elbow
- Knee
- Lower back
- Thigh
- Wrist
What is R.I.C.E?
RICE is a treatment method for soft tissue injury which is an abbreviation for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. It’s a highly recommended treatment by doctors and physios.  When used appropriately, recovery time is usually shortened and discomfort minimised.
RICE is for soft tissue strains and is considered more a first-aid treatment than an end-all cure. The aim is to reduce the internal bleeding.
Samples of the Lumark® cold compression therapy products are available to media for review.

How to Use:
- Refrigerate for at least two hours before using, except the pump and tube.
- Take it from the fridge and connect the tube to the ON/OFF switch.
- Strap the wrap in place using the velcro straps.
- Make sure the ON/OFF switch is in the ON position.
- Squeeze the pump approx 5-8 times to create compression on the joint. Do not over pump the compression wrap, as this will over compress the joint, and may pull the wrap off your ankle.
- Put the ON/OFF switch to the OFF position. You may now remove the tube and pump if you desire.
- We recommend no more than 5-10 minutes compression at any one time. The ideal would be 5-10 minutes compression, then 5-10 minutes no compression. You can keep the compression wrap on, just turn the switch to ON to release the air.
- When finished release the air, and put back into the fridge for next time. Â
