Orthopaedics

Orthopaedics is the medical specialty concerned with diseases, injuries and conditions of the musculoskeletal system in both children and adults. This system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

Orthopaedists (orthopaedic physicians) employ medical, physical and rehabilitative methods as well as surgical methods (in the case of orthopaedic surgeons). The orthopaedist may specialise in several areas and may collaborate with such specialists as neurosurgeons or rheumatologists in resolving patient conditions.

They are competent in diagnosing:

  • an injury or disorder – identifying and treating an injury with medication, exercise, surgery or other appropriate treatments.
  • Providing rehabilitation to restore movement, strength and function, or
  • establishing preventative measures to prevent further damage to the injured or diseased area.
