Pilates
The Pilates Method, developed in the 1920s by athlete and physical therapy pioneer, Joseph H Pilates, is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the whole body (without building bulk), as well as enhancing recovery from injury through a precise system of exercise rehabilitation.
The Method is based upon principles of postural training and back rehabilitation – experiencing all movement from the inside out. It’s a series of controlled movements requiring mental concentration that engages both the body and mind. The Method is performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus and supervised by trained instructors.
The versatility of Pilates serves the needs of a broad spectrum of individuals with differing injuries, fitness levels and technical proficiencies, and is very popular with dancers, athletes and fitness enthusiasts. As both a rehabilitation and wellness program, Pilates has recently been discovered by physiotherapists, chiropractors and integrated into programs designed to speed recovery of soft tissue injury.
