Office Chair Cushions, Seat Wedges and Back Supports

If you spend most of the day in a chair, the cushion under you and the support behind you decide how your back feels by five o’clock. Bad Backs stocks the back and seat cushions that Australian physiotherapists and ergonomists actually recommend: the Bad Backs firm seat wedge that tilts the pelvis into a healthy sitting position, the Curble posture seat, the award-winning Obus Forme lowback support and the BetterBack lumbar support, plus our own exclusive designs made with medical input. Looking for something specific? See lumbar rolls, wedge seat cushions, coccyx cut-out cushions, car seat supports or a full ergonomic office chair.

Which cushion fixes which problem?

Most sitting pain comes from one of three things, and each has its own cushion. If you slump or sit back on your tailbone, a seat wedge raises the back of the seat so your pelvis tilts forward and your spine stacks on its own. If there is a gap between your lower back and the chair, a lumbar support or back cushion fills it and keeps the natural curve. If the pain is at the tailbone itself, a coccyx cut-out cushion or donut cushion takes the pressure off the sore spot. Many people with lower back pain do best with a wedge under them and a lumbar support behind them, which is why the two are often bought together.

Office chair cushions and seat pads

An office chair cushion should be firm enough to hold its shape for a full day, not a soft pillow that flattens by lunchtime. The firm seat wedge and its premium version use high density foam that does not bottom out, with a washable zip cover, and they are small enough to move between the office chair, the car and the dining chair. The Curble posture corrector seat does the same job in a moulded seat that many people find more comfortable for long sessions. Look for a non-slip base, a cover you can wash, and a height that keeps your knees level with or slightly below your hips.

Back supports and lumbar cushions

A good back support turns an ordinary chair into an ergonomic one. The Obus Forme lowback, highback and wideback supports have a contoured frame that holds the whole back, the BetterBack lumbar support straps to any chair and is exclusive to Bad Backs in Australia, and the Bad Backs Airflow memory foam and gel back support stays cool through summer. For a lighter option, our premium lumbar support for flat-backed chairs and the D lumbar half roll fit the small of the back and cost less than a physio visit.

Cushions for the car, travel and home

Car seats are built for crash safety, not for your lumbar curve. The Bad Backs premium lumbar support for bucket seats is shaped for car seats and the Smartrip lower back support is a simple, inexpensive fix for the gap behind you when driving. For getting in and out of the car with a sore back or hip, a swivel seat cushion lets you turn without twisting. At home, the BetterBack orthopaedic seat with lumbar roll turns a sofa or armchair into a supportive seat.

What do back and seat cushions cost?

A lumbar half roll starts at $23.95 and the Smartrip support at $34.95. Most seat wedges, lumbar supports and back cushions sit between $49.95 and $109, and the Obus Forme contoured supports are $165 to $199. Every cushion here is one we would recommend in our own showrooms, and if you are not sure which one suits your chair or your pain, call us or come in and try them.

Why buy your seat cushion from Bad Backs?

Bad Backs has specialised in back pain products since 2001, with showrooms in Sydney (Cammeray), Melbourne (Fairfield) and Perth (Nedlands) where you can sit on every cushion before you buy. Our own range is designed with input from medical professionals, our staff use these products themselves, and we carry the supports that physiotherapists and occupational therapists send their patients to us for. If a cushion does not solve the problem, we will tell you what will.

FAQs

Are office chair cushions worth it?

Yes, if you sit for long periods and your chair does not support you. A firm seat wedge or a lumbar support costs a fraction of a new ergonomic chair and fixes the two most common causes of sitting pain: a pelvis that tips backwards into a slump, and a lower back with nothing behind it. They are not a substitute for getting up and moving every 30 to 45 minutes, but they make the time in the chair far easier on your back.

What type of cushion is best for an office chair?

It depends on where it hurts. For a slumped lower back, a firm seat wedge. For a gap between your lower back and the chair, a lumbar support or back cushion. For tailbone pain, a coccyx cut-out or donut cushion. Firm, high density foam holds its shape all day; soft memory foam feels good at first but flattens and stops supporting you.

What is the best seat cushion for sitting all day?

A firm seat wedge, because it changes your sitting position rather than just padding it. The Bad Backs firm seat wedge and the Curble posture seat are the two we recommend most for full days at a desk, usually with a lumbar support behind you as well.

What can I put on my office chair to make it more comfortable?

Start with a lumbar support behind your lower back and, if you tend to slump, a seat wedge underneath. Adjust the chair so your feet are flat and your knees are level with your hips, and raise your screen to eye level. If the seat itself is worn out, no cushion will fix it and it is time to look at a new chair.

Do I need a seat wedge or a lumbar support?

If you sit back on your tailbone and your lower back rounds, the wedge. If you sit reasonably upright but your lower back aches because the chair is flat behind you, the lumbar support. Many people use both, and if you are unsure, our showroom staff can watch you sit and tell you in a minute.

Will these cushions fit a car seat?

Most of them. The Bad Backs premium lumbar support for bucket seats and the Smartrip lower back support are made for cars, the firm seat wedge fits most driver seats, and a swivel seat cushion helps you get in and out without twisting. Check the product page for dimensions if your seat is unusually narrow.
