What Is a Martindale Rub Rating?

The Martindale Rub Rating is an industry standard test used to measure how durable an upholstery fabric is. It simulates repeated abrasion by rubbing the fabric in a controlled pattern until visible wear appears. The final score — expressed as a number of “rubs” — indicates how well the fabric will stand up to everyday use.

• 10,000–20,000 rubs: Suitable for light domestic use
• 20,000–40,000 rubs: Ideal for general commercial environments
• 40,000+ rubs: High‑performance fabrics designed for heavy‑duty or high‑traffic settings

For office seating, a higher Martindale rating provides added confidence that the fabric will maintain its appearance and integrity over time.
